Now that you’ve seen me in my pjs, I feel like we know one another!
Here’s another thing about me: I love breakfast, but I don’t eat breakfast. I drink it! My breakfast consists of two of my favourite things: coffee and oatmeal. I probably drink more coffee than water (I know that’s not exactly healthy, but I’m working on it!) Every morning, I make a delicious coffee shake that ties me over until my morning snack (a piece of fruit, some nuts or trail mix). Give it a try!

Coffee and Oat Shake
Serves 1
The great thing about this recipe is that you can adjust the ingredients to your liking. A few years ago, I stopped putting sugar in my coffee, so these days I don’t enjoy anything too sweet in my coffee shake. I only add one date, but you could increase it to 2-3 if you prefer. I also like my coffee with lots of milk, you can adjust as you like, as well.
I also love adding cardamom to my shake, but if that’s not a flavour you enjoy you can omit it. The shake will still taste terrific either way. You could add cocoa powder instead ( 2-3 tablespoons).
The recipe below doesn’t include a banana (not my favourite combination). I keep my morning shake pretty basic. If you want to add a banana to make this shake more filling, add one in.
Ingredients:
1 cup strong brewed coffee
1/3 cup milk (substitute for any non-dairy milk)
1 date, pitted
3 tablespoons oats
3 cardamom pods (remove the seeds from the pods, and crush the seeds with a pestal and mortar. Discard the pods) or 1/8 tsp of ground cardamom
3-5 ice cubes (optional)
Instructions:
- In a blender, mix all ingredients. Blend on high until the dates and oats have been broken down.
- Pour into a tall glass and enjoy.
Note: While I have been making coffee shakes for a while and this is an original recipe, I’ve found inspiration for shakes from a great Smoothie book called Green Kitchen Smoothies. The authors are the well known bloggers from Green Kitchen Stories and if you haven’t heard of them I would highly recommend checking it out.

I’m not a coffee drinker but you make me want to be one!
